Take my Hand: Art as a form of Prayer;
liminal spaces in sacred landscapes

by Steph Shipley

You may remember the first stage of my Utopias Bach Experiment Take my hand: Art as a form of Prayer; liminal spaces in sacred landscapes and my Exhibition in Llanfechell in June 2023. I remain ever grateful for the conversations and exchanges that ensued.

Walks I envisaged to the small Betysai or Houses of Prayer on the north coast of Ynys Môn evolved organically during and since the Exhibition.  There was no need for formal invitations or the setting of scenes or scores or expectations.  I was moved and humbled by the rich experiences I shared with my walking companions.

With the turning of years and seasons, my Experiment has re-gained momentum. The walks so far are to be re-presented through my imagination and the spiritual dimension of my art practice. Other elements will be offered as a thanksgiving to the Houses of Prayer.

If you would like to walk with me as this next chapter unfolds, just email me here: stephyshipley@hotmail.com

Our walk may be just a few or more steps, a standing still, a wild dance, a slow drive, a sitting down or a deep listening.  We may not go very far, but I think it will be far enough.

If you would like to know more, please do join the Utopias Bach Collaboratory on Zoom on Thursday 10 April 2025 11 - 12.30.

Gan/by Lisa Hudson

The idea of Cwilt Utopias Bach Quilt came from our Collaboratory in September 2023, where, in partnership with Rewilding the Artist, we were discussing how we might embody our Utopias Bach evolving ‘feel, experience, invitation, system, policies, etiquette, cultures’ rather than having a dry set of ‘fixed’ paper-based policies and descriptions. How can we bring fun to the arts in an area which can be frustrating and tiresome?

Since then we have been working on the Quilt in various ways (eg in sound, words and 3-D works as well as with stitching), exploring how can we create a policy that is a living, breathing, reflexive process?

Two sessions are coming up:

Collaboratory 25.3.25 ZOOM 11 - 12.30

Stitch a Sgwrs 1.4.25 Caban, Brynrefail 1 - 4yh/pm

We will be exploring how ’scores’ or prompts could help us focus our quilting activities.

Please bring any ‘bits of quilt’ with you if you any (whether sewing, sound, movement, words, drawing etc) /bring materials (quilting might be stitching

Croeso cynnes i bawb! Warm welcome to all, whether or not you have been contributing to the quilt!

Experimental Theotre - Exploring theory and post-dramatic theatre

Heiner Müller: "Theater, denen es nicht mehr gelingt, die Frage WAS SOLL DAS zu provozieren, werden mit Recht geschlossen.“

(Rather frrely translated into English: "Theatres that no longer succeed in provoking the question WHAT THE FUCK WHY AND WHAT IS THIS are rightly closed.")

This group is exploring how can theoretical texts act as epiphytes for dramatic texts, how can we graft theoretical textbites and stage, what does theatricality (theatre = θέατρον (théatron = place for viewing) help us to see in a dramatic vs a theoretical text?

Experimental Theotre events are hybrid - on zoom and in the room in Bangor.

If you’d like to join in this exploration, please email: postdramatictheotre@gmail.com

Ysgol Chwyn - Weeds School

Collaboratory December 24: Desiging Ysgol Chwyn

“We need to begin to recognise how we could conspire with the plants – seeding plant-people conspiracies - connecting people and plants together to breathe together, justice for people, their plants, plants and their people” - Natasha Myers

Yn yr arbrawf hwn, dan ni’n mynd i archwilio'n greadigol gyda'n gilydd yr hyn y gallwn ei ddysgu oddi wrth a gyda chwyn?

In this experiment we will be creatively exploring together what can we learn from and with weeds? We want to work creatively together to build community, learning from and with ‘weeds’, and others at the margins.

This experiment will build on what we learned at Ysgol Arbrofol Dod at Ein Coed: Experimental TreeSense School in 2023, and our residency at Oriel Mostyn in 2022.

We have submitted an application for funding and if successful, this experiment will start in September 2025. We are not feeling very hopeful, so if you have any ideas how to fund or support this kind of work please let us know!
